"Innovation is a matter of survival"

"Innovation is a matter of survival"

| by Eric Chan

Eric Chan, Chair of the Knowledge Management Development Centre talks to ARK Group about the benefits that KM can bring to help organisations create incremental innovation.

1. Thank you Eric for taking part in this brief Q&A ahead of KM Asia 2017. As Chair of Day 1 at this year's conference, what do you think are the biggest challenges facing professionals working in KM across Asia in the next 12 months?

People and organisational culture are still the biggest challenges, however some technology vendors are proposing machine learning and big data analytics as a solution. I would love to hear views from the participants at KM Asia on this debate.

2. On Day 2, you'll be exploring the concept of KM and innovation. Why is this such a powerful combination and how do you think large and small organisations can truly benefit from this?

Many industries are being disrupted by new business models based on innovation. The success formula of some leading companies is now irrelevant and everybody is talking about digital transformation and innovation to fend off disruptors. KM could play a vital role to boost incremental innovation and generate breakthrough innovation, for both large and small organisations.

3. Why do you think innovation is so important to organisations looking to grow and gain an advantage over their competitors?

Competition now comes from not just within your own vertical industry but everywhere, because of new business models and platform ecosystems. No industry is protected from such disruptions and innovation is a matter of survival.

4. How can KM play a crucial part in this?
Consolidate on what we know and find out what we need to know. Enterprise-wide KM could play a critical role in speeding up innovation, from product, process and even create new business models.
